The Batman news onslaught carries over onto this weeks DVD releases. As usual, opinions on this weeks major releases is always encouraged.

Batman Gotham Knight - Here we have six animated interlocking stories that bridge the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Hopefully this will be better than The Animatrix (same idea as Gotham Knight), although I didn’t think that was terrible. Many talented writers, including David Goyer and Josh Olson, teamed up with six different directors to bring these stories to life…can’t wait!

X-Files Revelations - This release contains 8 episodes from the series that apparently provide a good base for the upcoming movie; X-Files: I Want To Believe. The movie is apparently a stand-alone story and unrelated to the show/first film’s story arc, but I’ll use any reason to re-visit the original show. Man, I’m glad the X-Files are back.

The Ruins - Based on the best selling novel by Scott Smith, The Ruins is about a pair of couples that encounter something mysterious down in Mexico when visiting an ancient Mayan ruins site. I haven’t seen this one, but it was a concept that peaked my interest when it came out. If you’re a horror fan, I would say this is one to pick up this week.

The Mummy (Universal Legacy Series) - No detailed description necessary. The original 1932 classic with an unmatched performance by Boris Karloff. If you haven’t seen it, pick this up.

I know the majority of things that I’ve written about so far have been about The Dark Knight, but with it’s release just upon us, I can’t contain myself. I happened to stumble upon the scene from the movie in which The Joker crashes a party that Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent are attending. You’ll recognize it from the trailer. Anyway, it’s about a minute of Heath Ledger’s performance that we haven’t seen so far and it really gives you a good idea of how this thing’s going to play out. This would definitley not be considered a spoiler, but if you want to go into the movie with a clean slate, proceed with caution.

My Blueberry Nights - Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Norah Jones star in Hong Kong based director Wong Kar Wai’s first attempt at an English language movie. Once again, Wong Kar Wai treads familiar territory examining themes such as love and hearbreak. If you’ve ever seen his 2001 film “In The Mood For Love”, then you’ll be just as eager to see this one as much as I am.

Drillbit Taylor - Owen Wilson stars as an ex soldier hired by a couple of teenagers to be their bodyguard at school. Co-written by Seth Rogen, the movie appeared to have some funny moments, although it was not terribly successful at the box office. If you like the typical Owen Wilson shtick, then I’m sure this one if for you.

Mad Men - Season One - This A&E drama about an ad agency in the 1960’s came out of the gate with some pretty great reviews. I was able to catch an episode when the season initially ran, and liked what I saw. This is a great alternative to the lack of HBO programming that we’ve seen since The Sopranos went off the air. Check it out.

It’s extremely well done, and appears to have been done by the comic’s creator Mike Mignola, which is extremely cool. It’s actually quite long, which leads me to believe that there will be a more condensed version in the movie when it hits screens on July 11th.

The Dark Knight is hands down going to be the best movie of the summer. I know, I know, how can I say that without having seen it yet? Well, I’m just that confident in it. The Batman movies played a big part in molding my love for movies in general, so the fact that Batman Begins and TDK are of the caliber that they are, makes me a very happy. Anyway, I just want to let everybody know that advance tickets are already on sale. Go! Buy! Now! The better this movie does at the box office, the better our chances of getting a third movie are. The Dark Knight opens in theaters on July 18th.

Dark Horizons has discovered the trailer for “Disaster Movie” over at the MySpace Trailer Park. I think disaster is a bit of an understatement here. It’s another “spoof” movie in the vain of Scary, Date, Epic, and I can’t believe that there’s even that many of them to list. The only reason I’m writing about this is because it’s mind boggling how quickly they’re churning these out. Now, it’s not that think these movies don’t have their place in the comedic film space, because I do. I grew up on my fair share of Airplane & Naked Gun movies. It’s just that they’re not even trying anymore, mainly because people keep showing up in droves to see them for some reason.

These types of flicks used to actually have something to say in regards to the movies they were spoofing, well, kind of. Now it’s just a race to see how many current pop cultural gags they can fit on screen at once. The only logical next step would be to spoof films that haven’t even begun shooting yet. Ok, I can ramble on about this for a while, so just go and check out the trailer just to see what a disaster really looks like. I want to hear what people think of this

Oh, also, I’m pretty sure if it weren’t for these types of movies, current and former MadTV “stars” would be screwed….that says alot.

I know what you’re thinking and the answer is no, this is not just a DVD Tuesday blog. It may seem that way because those are pretty much the only things I’ve posted about. I assure you, that’s not the goal of the site. In the meantime, this will have to do.

There are a bunch of DVD releases this week, a few of which I’ll be picking up.

In Bruges - Colin Farrell stars in this under the radar dark comedy about two Irish gangsters on the run in Bruges, Belgium. I’ve heard great things about this flick and is my #1 pick for this week. I was not happy when I missed this in theaters earlier on this year.

10,000 B.C. - Roland Emmerich’s follow up to The Day After Tomorrow. Personally, I have no desire to see this one, but many of you out there might be up for this loincloth’d adventure.

The Spiderwick Chronicles - Another children’s fantasy novel cashing in on the post Harry Potter craze. I’m interested in picking this one up just because Freddie Highmore seems to continuously star in interesting films…oh, and Seth Rogen’s in it apparently. Sold!

The Hammer - Typically I wouldn’t even put an Adam Carolla movie on this list, but this is another one that i’ve only heard good things about.

Persepolis - Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature, this film is supposed to be just as good as the graphic novel it’s based on.

Until next time…
